Rare Books@Becker – New Online Exhibit

Rare Books@Becker online exhibit

The Bernard Becker Medical Library at Washington University has launched its newest online exhibit, Rare Books@Becker. The exhibit presents notable volumes selected from the Library’s nine rare book collections.

The Bernard Becker Medical Library is home to one of the nation’s finest collections of historical medical materials. Begun in 1912 with the acquisition of Julius Pagel’s personal library from Berlin, the collections are among the oldest in the United States. The strengths of the collections include ophthalmology, neurology, anatomy, ENT, dentistry, obstetrics and gynecology. The more than 26,000 volumes in the nine collections support historical research by providing insight into the evolution of western medical knowledge and practice.

Rare Books@Becker describes the scope and history of each of the collections and then highlights a number of individual items. According to rare book librarian Lilla Vekerdy, the exhibit “provides a showcase for not only some of the well-known medical classics but also some lesser-known, though equally interesting and deserving, texts. We were able to include small, but intriguing, details about so many of the items.”
