Genetic Variation
CME Credits: 2
Target Audience:
Faculty, researchers, staff and students who want to learn more about searching the NCBI’s suite of databases related to genetics, gene sequences, and gene mapping.
Prerequisite:
None
Description:
The focus of this class is to develop an understanding of the basic concepts and terminology of genetic variation, and to determine the best resources to use to answer specific questions regarding genetic variation. A number of relevant databases will be featured.
Goals:
To provide a short course on how to search NCBI’s biological and biomedical sciences database. The main aim is to provide efficient methodologies for searching the databases and arriving at specified results.
Objectives:
To present the various search tools available via NCBI in such a manner that they may be used most efficiently to retrieve specific search and data.
Intended Results:
- Understand the basic concepts and terminology of genetic variation.
- Determine which information resources to use to answer specific questions concerning genetic variation.
- Search OMIM, dbSNP using a variety of methods.
- Understand the output results.
