About Bioinformatics @ Becker
The Bernard Becker Medical Library is a world-class facility and maintains a vast collection of resources for the Washington University School of Medicine community. The Library operates in accordance with the highest standards of all aspects of service to its patrons. This dedication to excellence is further exemplified by Becker’s commitment to enrich bioinformatics support to biomedical researchers. The focus arose as a result of the overwhelming amount of biological data which is constantly generated through a number of different biochemical, biophysical, and computational research approaches. The NIH Biomedical Information Science and Technology Initiative Consortium agreed on the following definition of bioinformatics:
Research, development, or application of computational tools and approaches for expanding the use of biological, medical, behavioral or health data, including those to acquire, store, organize, archive, analyze, or visualize such data.*
The Becker Medical Library, along with a growing number of research institutions, realizes the importance of fostering the connection between research in the biological and biomedical sciences and information tools. The Bernard Becker Medical Library is among the first libraries in the United States to lead this approach with two full-time professional bioinformatics support specialists on staff.
