Series 4: Station Hospital Commemorative Book, Camp Kearns, 1943

Kearns Army Air Force Training Command opened in July of 1942, located 13 miles southwest of Salt Lake City Utah. Camp Kearns was a temporary base originally known as BTC (Basic Training Command) No. 5, a unit first under the Western Technical Training Command. Kearns was known for its large 10-winged hospital with a 1,800 bed capacity. The Kearns hospital was the second largest in the state of Utah during that time, and the largest dental installation in the United States.

Kearns had five commanding officers: Colonel Leo F. Post, Colonel John W Monahan, Colonel Converse R. Lewis, Colonel Walter F. Sigmund, and Colonel Weldon W Doe. Camp Kearns closed November 26, 1946. Based on research, Colonel Lewis was in command at the time the commemorative book was issued, making it likely the book had been issued sometime before the fall of 1943. Colonel Lewis was discharged from his duties at Kearns in October 1943.
