Description: Portrait of Joseph Nash McDowell, by John S. Brewer, 1860. Oil on canvas, framed, with protective glass, total dimensions 56 x 49 inches. A brass plaque on the base of the frame reads: “JOSEPH NASH MCDOWELL.” McDowell was the founder of the Kemper College Medical Department, earliest of the corporate predecessors of Washington University School of Medicine. His school became the Medical Department of the University of Missouri 1846 and, in 1857, independent Missouri Medical College, but was better known in those years by the popular name, “McDowell’s Medical College.”
