Portrait of William Beaumont, M.D., by Chester Harding, ca. 1850. Oil on canvas, framed, total dimensions 40 x 35 1/2 inches. A brass plaque on the base of the frame reads: “WILLIAM BEAUMONT.” Beaumont was a pioneer surgeon and physiologist, commonly credited with being among the first American scientific medical researchers. “William Beaumont” is thought to have been painted about 1850 on the commission of the subject’s family. The portrait was donated by Beaumont’s daughter, Sarah Beaumont Keim, to St. Louis Medical College of Washington University in 1897. The work was restored by Clemens L. Robertson, of the St. Louis Art Museum, in 1986. |
