About Podcasts
Most podcasts are distributed as RSS feeds, though many web sites also offer direct download or streaming of their audio content. In order to subscribe to a podcast, you must install an aggregator or pod receiving software that allows you to receive and download files. Most aggregators are free. Popular aggregators include:
The aggregator is usually an always-on program which starts when your computer is started and runs in the background. It checks for feeds at specified intervals (such as every 6 or 12 hours) and downloads new or substantially changed feed data. The downloaded audio files can be played, replayed or saved like any other computer file. Some applications (such as mypodder) automatically download episodes to your portable MP3 player.
