Medical School Computer Education Series

The Bernard Becker Medical Library and the Medical School Central IT Services offer courses to the entire University community on a range of topics related to information management and computer applications. Training opportunities provided by ancillary departments of the University are listed as well.

Medical School Computer Education Courses

Courses in this series:

Courses are taught by qualified Library staff and by professional instructors from ExecuTrain, a St. Louis training company.

Continuing Medical Education (CME) Credit

Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit is now available for most classes. Under the entry for each class is listed the number of hours awarded. To obtain credit, an additional $6 per credit hour is assessed. Objectives for individual courses are listed in student confirmation letters.

Accreditation

Washington University is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.

Washington University designates this educational activity for a maximum of (to be determined) hours in Category 1 credit toward the AMA Physicians Recognition Award. Physicians should claim only those hours of credit that they actually spend in the educational activity.

Customized Training and Additional Courses

Classes can be tailored to particular departmental needs upon request. In addition, customized classes are available through ExecuTrain.

Preferred Vendor Training Program

The University has an agreement with ExecuTrain under which University faculty, staff and students can register at reduced rates for computer classes taught at its training facilities. Contact ExecuTrain or check its website for a schedule of classes at the ExecuTrain facility.

Locations

Most classes are held in Room 601B of the Bernard Becker Medical Library. For locations of off-campus courses, please consult the contact person for the course. Please note: Food and drink are not allowed in 601B.

Medical Center Parking

Because parking is at a premium at the Medical Center, we suggest that individuals coming from the Danforth Campus use Metrolink or the Metro 01 WUSTL Gold bus.

University Help Desks

Medical School Central IT Services (MSCITS) Service Desk

The MSCITS Service Desk is the clearinghouse for computer support information coordinated by the Bernard Becker Medical Library. It fields questions from medical school computer users about systems, networks and computers and provides frontline support for the medical school’s computing and networking groups. The Service Desk answers questions concerning system availability and training opportunities and supports the Library’s Information Services Division by answering questions about access to EUCLID, the Library’s biomedical search system.

Administrative Information Systems: Systems and Procedures Help Desk

The Systems and Procedures Help Desk is the principal support area for the use of the Administrative Online System at Washington University. The Administrative Online System is a university-wide information system designed to support administrative activities managing financial, personnel, payroll, student and grant information.

Support Services: assistance is provided in using the Administrative Online System (Financial Information System, Payroll/Personnel System, Grants Budgeting, Personnel Hiring, and Accounts Payable) including answering policy and procedure questions; establishing user accounts with authorized access to online information; communicating changes to the systems that affect policies, procedures or availability; and providing online communications from department and central fiscal unit areas.

Training Services: any user with an account and authorization to access online system information is eligible to register for Administrative Online System courses. Please refer to the Administrative Online System course descriptions or refer to the Office of Human Resources Training and Development Course Catalog on the World Wide Web.

Documentation Services: AIS Policy and Procedure volumes such as General Accounting, Procurement, Budget Object Codes and Assets are available to authorized users of Administrative Information Systems. These manuals can be obtained by contacting the Xerox copy center at 314-935-5790. A blanket order number must be provided to cover the cost of the hardcopy.

Administrative Information Systems: FOCUS Help Desk:

The FOCUS Help Desk is the principal support area for the use of FOCUS at Washington University. FOCUS is used at Washington University as a data warehouse for storing data from the Administrative Online System (FIS, SIS, Grants Budgeting, Payroll/Personnel, Space, Assets, etc.). End users can run reports that are selectable from menus, develop their own customized reports, and interact with specialized applications created by others. Developers can design and create specialized databases, applications and reports.

Support Services: assistance is provided in using FOCUS menu reports; designing, developing, and resolving problems with customized reports and customized applications; printing reports; establishing FOCUS accounts with authorized access to FOCUS information; and accessing the FOCUS application.

Training Services: any user with an account and authorization to access FOCUS system information is eligible to register for FOCUS Reporting courses.
